Welcome to Kanvaswork!

Updated: Oct 15, 2020

Kanvaswork is an ever evolving venture in all things canvas; Shelters, Awnings, Canopies, Windbreakers, Rucksacks, Groundsheets, Beachbags and Floor cushions.

Kanvaswork is our family run business. Being based in Cornwall, we are lucky enough to have the beautiful wild Cornish landscape as our back garden. Having spent a lot of our time out in the elements camping, travelling, helping out with events and socialising we have always owned and used canvas structures; from scout tents to bell tents, bowtop wagons to tarps rigged up in the trees...

At our core we are Kel & Matt Odgers-Brown, a family team. We have both spent much time travelling and living off-grid, and have learned the value of a good bit of canvas.

Our love of the outdoors coupled with our craft, knowledge and time spent in the elements has set us on a natural trajectory of making shelters in all sorts of settings. We both spent the majority of our formative years outdoors, either camping, exploring by sail or on foot, getting to know the land and the best ways to make secure and waterproof shelters in all weathers and winds. This complete love of the great outdoors and experience has greatly informed our practices at Kanvaswork.

Now, more than ever we all need to feel connected to nature and to share time together at the wild edges of our lives. It is easy to feel the benefit of a day of fresh air and the soothing crackle of the fire at night. We are all in deep need of these simple pleasures. And as we all know, when we're out on a windy wayside or in a sun-baked field, and you stick up a little canvas shelter, it creates an instant oasis and sense of home. Likewise, when you take yourself off for a day of walking with your flask and your book ; your comfy backpack becomes your companion...these simple little items become trusted and familiar, like old friends.

Our knowledge and belief that in making things that are strong and functional, we are cutting down on waste and providing people with peace of mind that they are investing in something that'll last.

We live and work in Cornwall. A place known for its beautiful coastal scenery as well as its history in fishing and seafaring. Here you can still find a few traditional sail lofts making boat sails, covers and outdoor gear. Along with these niche products, sail makers apply their skills to help us make our canopies, awnings and bags. We have made some wonderful allies in friends, who really know the craft, and we feel passionately that trade and manufacturing should be done as locally as possible, wherever you are in the world. This way, we build robust networks, support our local economies and lower our carbon footprint.

All our products are made by hand in Cornwall, either by ourselves or by our friends, RB Sails just down the road in Hayle. We apply sail making techniques to all our processes, from the smallest rucksacks right up to our awnings...everything is re-enforced and assembled with strength and longevity in mind – from the weight of the canvas to the thickness of the thread.

All our materials are sourced from LOCAL specialist suppliers and we will never cut corners in order to cut costs. This is what drives us; our knowledge and belief that in making things that are strong and functional and made with care, we are cutting down on waste and providing people with peace of mind that when they buy from us, they are investing in something that'll last.
